About JEM

JEM — short for Jurong East Mall — opened on 15 June 2013, a few days later than its planned 11 June date because of last-minute tenancy issues. More than 10,000 shoppers came through in the first hour. The name is a bit of wordplay: it’s meant to read as the “gem” of Jurong and the west, and it was the first major shopping and lifestyle complex built to serve that side of Singapore.

The mall is owned and managed by Lendlease, through Lendlease Global Commercial REIT (the REIT sold off JEM’s office tower component to Keppel Ltd for S$462 million in August 2025, though the retail mall itself stayed with Lendlease). It spans 9 floors and roughly 818,000 sq ft of gross leasable area, with well over 200 stores across 9 anchor tenants. The tenant mix has shifted a fair bit over the years — Robinsons closed in August 2020 and was replaced by IKEA’s first small-format store in Southeast Asia in April 2021, and Cathay Cineplexes’ 10-screen cinema closed in March 2025, with Shaw Theatres taking over.

A couple of things worth knowing if you’re using JEM as a tuition base:

• Directly connected to Jurong East MRT — no need to cross a road or go outdoors to get from the train platform into the mall.
• Linked to Westgate via the elevated J-Walk and underground concourse — useful if you’re running errands or grabbing food between lessons at either mall.
• Speech Academy Asia also runs a speech-and-drama enrichment branch inside JEM’s office tower at 52 Jurong Gateway Road, #06-01 — it isn’t listed on tuitioncentres.sg yet, so we can’t give you full contact details, but it’s worth knowing about if the centre below doesn’t fit your child’s needs.

Getting to JEM: MRT & parking

By MRT: Jurong East MRT station (EW24 on the East-West Line, NS1 on the North-South Line) connects directly into JEM — no need to surface outdoors.

By bus: JEM is about a 5-minute walk from the (temporary) Jurong East Bus Interchange.

By car: Take Exit 27 off the PIE or Exit 11 off the AYE to reach 50 Jurong Gateway Road, Singapore 608549. JEM’s car park has 669 lots across basements B2 and B3, with EV charging available at B3. Per JEM’s own published rates (inclusive of 9% GST from 1 January 2024):

• Monday–Thursday: S$2.18 for the first hour, then S$0.55 per 15 minutes; a flat S$3.27 applies per entry from 6pm onwards.
• Friday–Sunday & public holidays: S$2.73 for the first hour, then S$0.65 per 15 minutes; the same S$3.27 flat evening rate applies from 6pm.
• Motorcycles: S$1.64 per entry. Loading bay: S$1.42 per 30 minutes.

For a typical 1.5-hour lesson block, that works out to roughly S$3.28 on a weekday and S$4.03 on a weekend.

J Connect, across Jurong Gateway Road, is close enough to walk to from the same MRT exit — about 5–6 minutes on foot — so most parents heading there won’t need to drive or find separate parking.
