Over 1200+ Tuition Centres

Katong Shopping Centre is the old-timer of the Mountbatten Road stretch — a low-rise, no-frills mall that’s been trading since the 1970s while shinier neighbours like Katong V and i12 Katong went up around it. It doesn’t get written up much these days, but it still holds a small, working cluster of tuition and music tutors tucked among the tailors and printing shops.

We swept every listing in our database by straight-line distance from 865 Mountbatten Road rather than trusting how each one had been categorised, and only four came back genuinely inside the building. We didn’t stretch the list to include Katong V, Roxy Square, or i12 Katong further down the road — those are a separate walk and get their own write-ups. Here’s what’s actually on-site.

1. Drum Tutor Singapore (Katong Shopping Centre)

Address: 865 Mountbatten Road, #02-45, Singapore 437844
Phone: +65 9666 4979 | Website: drumtutor.sg

Drum Tutor was set up by Er Chow Kiat, an award-winning drummer, and is an official education partner of the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles — a curriculum tie-in that’s fairly unusual for a neighbourhood drum school. Students move through named levels (it starts students off as “Ankle-Biters” and works up to “Rockstar”) with the option of sitting Rockschool or Trinity grading exams along the way. This is one of five Drum Tutor outlets around Singapore, and lessons run as private, one-to-one sessions rather than group classes.

  • Drum lessons for kids, teens, and adults, from complete beginner through grading-exam level
  • Free trial lesson available

Jing Music School is a newer addition to the building, teaching piano and violin with an emphasis on getting the basics solid before moving a student forward — foundation first, rather than rushing toward exam pieces. It’s a straightforward pick if you’re after an instrument teacher rather than a full academic tuition centre.

  • Piano and violin lessons
  • Paid trial class available

How do I get to Katong Shopping Centre without a car?

Marine Parade MRT station (TE26, Thomson-East Coast Line) is the closest stop, about a 7–8 minute walk via Exit 2 up Mountbatten Road. A bus stop right outside the mall on Mountbatten Road is served by several services, including 10 and 32.

About Katong Shopping Centre

Katong Shopping Centre opened to the public in 1973, after construction began a couple of years earlier, and it’s often credited as the first air-conditioned shopping mall in Singapore — a genuine draw when it opened, in an era of mostly open-air shophouse retail. The building sits at 865 Mountbatten Road, right where Mountbatten Road meets Haig Road and Amber Road, close to Katong Market. It spans around 90,000 square feet across seven floors and holds more than 300 shop units.

The tenant mix reflects its age: tailors, photocopying and printing shops, opticians, cosmetics stores, an employment agency or two, a Teo Heng KTV outlet, banks, a grocery store, and a food centre (Katong Gourmet Food Centre, plus Food With Benefits) rather than the fashion-and-F&B lineup you’d find at a newer mall. It’s also, by our count, survived at least four separate attempts at a collective sale — in 2010, 2011, 2014, and 2016 — none of which went through, so it’s kept trading continuously since the 1970s.

Getting to Katong Shopping Centre: MRT & parking

By MRT: Marine Parade station (TE26) on the Thomson-East Coast Line is the closest stop today, roughly 450m away as the crow flies — about a 7–8 minute walk via Exit 2, continuing up Mountbatten Road past Roxy Square. Katong Shopping Centre’s own site still lists Dakota (CC8), Eunos (EW7), and Paya Lebar (CC9/EW8) as its MRT access points, which made sense before the Thomson-East Coast Line opened this stretch, but Marine Parade is by far the shorter walk now.

By bus: There’s a bus stop directly outside the mall on Mountbatten Road itself — officially named “Katong Shop Ctr” — served by services including 10 and 32, among others running along Mountbatten Road.

By car: The mall’s own carpark rates, per its official site, are:

  • 7am–5:59pm, Monday–Saturday: $1.20 per 30 minutes.
  • 6pm–6:59am, Monday–Saturday, and all day Sunday/Public Holiday: a flat $2.00 per entry.

For a typical daytime lesson block, that’s about $2.40 for an hour or $3.60 for 90 minutes — cheap compared to the metered rates at some of the newer malls nearby.

Prices, subjects, and trial class availability are updated periodically — always confirm directly with the centre before enrolling. Browse the full directory of Marine Parade tuition centres for more options.
