IB English Tuition Centres in Singapore
Most IB students in Singapore take English A, either Literature or Language and Literature, at SL or HL. Both are built on close reading and essay writing. Language and Literature also includes non-literary texts such as speeches, advertisements and articles. Students for whom English is not a first language may take English B instead.
What IB English covers
- Paper 1 guided textual analysis of an unseen passage, and Paper 2 comparative essay on works studied in class.
- The individual oral, linking a literary work and a second text to a global issue.
- The HL essay, a longer piece of literary or linguistic analysis written during the course.
Choosing an IB English tuition centre
Check that the centre teaches your child's exact course and level (SL or HL), and ask how much help it gives with the internal assessment. IB schools in Singapore sit either the May or the November exam session, so ask whether the timetable fits your child's session. Class size and whether a trial lesson is offered are worth comparing too; both are shown on each listing.
Frequently asked questions
Literature or Language and Literature?
Literature studies literary works only. Language and Literature mixes literary works with non-literary texts and media. Both are accepted by universities as an English qualification; pick the one your child will enjoy reading for two years.
Can tuition help with the individual oral?
Yes. Tutors can help students choose extracts, frame a global issue and practise speaking to time with feedback. The oral itself is the student's own work.
