About Goldhill Plaza
Goldhill Plaza opened in November 1972, developed by Goldhill Properties and designed by architect Yang Tai Tye with Eric Cumine & Associates as consultant architects. The complex is two connected structures: a 24-storey cylindrical office tower — reportedly inspired by the Colosseum, and described at the time as the first building of its kind in Singapore — sitting on a five-storey crescent-shaped podium with retail units, offices, restaurants, and a carpark on the upper levels.
The building did well early on despite charging higher rent than nearby developments, and City Developments Limited bought the complex the same year it opened, for $12.9 million. Its early success is also part of the reason Goldhill Square (later renamed United Square) got built nearby in 1982. Occupancy dipped in the early 1980s, and the tower changed hands again in 1989, sold to an Indonesian company for $93 million in what was reported as an unusually fast, roughly week-long negotiation. A 49-by-18-foot wall sculpture by Filipino sculptor Eduardo Castrillo, “The Rise of the Knitted Society,” has been installed in the building since 1973.
For a lesson-day errand, the podium’s food and retail units are enough to fill a wait between classes, though this is an office building at heart rather than a shopping mall — don’t expect the range of a full retail centre like United Square just across the road.
Getting to Goldhill Plaza: MRT & parking
By MRT: Novena MRT (NS20, North South Line) sits directly across Thomson Road from Goldhill Plaza — use Exit B, which faces the Thomson Road side of the station. Note that the underpass that once linked Exit B straight into Goldhill Plaza and Goldhill Centre was demolished in February 2021 for North-South Corridor construction and hasn’t been rebuilt; the tunnel section of that project isn’t due to complete until 2029. In the meantime, cross via the signalled pedestrian crossings on Thomson Road, or use the overhead bridge in front of Velocity@Novena Square.
By bus: Services 851, 980, and 141 stop in the immediate area.
By car: Goldhill Plaza sits at the corner of Thomson Road and Newton Road. From the CTE, take the Moulmein Road exit onto Thomson Road. Entry to the Goldhill Plaza/Goldhill Centre carpark is via Newton Road and Khiang Guan Avenue rather than a direct turn-in from Thomson Road, following a junction reconfiguration for North-South Corridor works.
